A short menu, cooked over fire, changed with the boats.

Fallow Keel is a thirty-four seat dining room. We buy whole fish from the day boats, butcher our own hogget, and build the menu around what the growers bring that week.

The kitchen

We cook what arrives, not what a menu card promises.

Our deliveries decide the menu, so it is printed fresh each service and some dishes last a fortnight while others last a night. If a boat stays in, the fish course changes; if the field is wet, the celeriac waits. Everything is cooked on a single wood-fired grill and two burners, which keeps the list short on purpose.

The dining room is one long room with the pass open to it, so you will hear the kitchen. Service is relaxed but paced — plan on two hours for dinner and a little longer for the set menu.

  • FishBought whole from day boats landing along the coast, filleted here, bones into stock the same evening.
  • MeatHogget and Dexter beef from two farms inland; we take whole sides and use the slow cuts through the week.
  • BreadOne naturally leavened loaf baked each morning, served with butter we culture in-house.
  • Nothing wastedTrim becomes garum, stems become pickles, and the day’s bread ends as crumb on the cabbage.

When we are open

The kitchen closes earlier than the room, so a late table is still a full dinner — just order before last orders.

  • Last orders are 30 minutes before the window closes.
  • The bar stays open an hour after the kitchen on Friday and Saturday.
  • Sunday is a single roast menu, served from 12:00 until it runs out.
  • Closed Monday and Tuesday, and for one week after New Year.

Questions we are asked most

Can you cook for dietary requirements?

Yes, and we would rather write you a different dish than hand over a plate with things taken off it. Vegetarian and vegan guests are straightforward with a day’s notice; coeliac and dairy-free need the same so we can plan the bread and butter courses. Note it in your request and the kitchen will reply with what they intend to cook.

How do you handle allergens?

Every dish is made in one small kitchen, so we can tell you exactly what is in it but cannot promise an allergen-free environment — nuts, shellfish, gluten and dairy are all handled on the same pass. For a severe allergy, tell us when you request the table and we will be honest about whether we can cook safely for you that night.

Do you take large groups?

Up to eight guests on the carte, and up to twelve on the Keel Table if you take the early sitting. Beyond twelve we would be serving the whole room, so we only do that as a private hire on a Wednesday. Groups of six or more eat from a reduced choice so the plates land together.

Are children welcome?

Very welcome at lunch and at the 17:30 dinner sitting. We do not keep a separate children’s menu, but the kitchen will happily plate a smaller portion of most dishes at a smaller price. There is room for one pram at the end of the room if you let us know in advance.

Can we walk in without a table?

There are six stools at the bar kept back for walk-ins every service, and they get the full carte. The dining room itself is usually committed by midweek, so if you have a fixed date it is worth requesting it rather than chancing the stools on a Friday.

Is there a deposit, and what if plans change?

The carte needs no deposit. The Keel Table is held with a small per-guest deposit that comes off your final bill, because the kitchen buys for your table specifically. Change or release it up to 48 hours before and the deposit carries to another date; inside 48 hours we keep it.
